LRC was selected by the University of Connecticut to lead the redesign of the Northeast Science Quadrangle—an evolving academic hub on the Storrs campus. Surrounded by key science buildings and recently framed by the new Engineering and Science Building, the site offered a chance to reimagine a central but underused area.
The project vision was to reimagine the quadrangle as an engaging, inclusive, and pedestrian-friendly environment — enhancing its aesthetic appeal while accommodating growing foot traffic and organically emerging desire lines. At the same time, the design needed to seamlessly integrate essential functions such as parking access and service deliveries.
The site posed several technical challenges, including complex underground utilities, shallow soils, rooftop conditions, and the need to minimize impact on the occupied buildings below. Working within UConn’s design standards and a collaborative review process, LRC engaged stakeholders across campus to shape a practical and cohesive solution that reflects the university’s academic mission.
As the prime consultant, LRC provided leadership and in-house services in landscape architecture, civil engineering, and land surveying, while coordinating a team of specialists in structural and electrical engineering, geotechnical analysis, and more. Completed in Fall 2019, the renewed quadrangle delivers a functional and welcoming public space at the center of UConn’s growing science district.
